Chapter X: The Marauder'south Map

In chapter x ofHarry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanHarry finds out his godfather caused the death of his parents, REMUS LUPIN agrees to help Harry with his dementor problem, and the twins give Harry one of the greatest gifts of all fourth dimension.

(Delight be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

One of the all-time overall chapters in all of Harry Potter opens with our boy Harry suffering in the hospital wing, and I'd similar to feel sad, merely how tin I when this happens:

The Gryffindor squad visited again on Lord's day morning, this time accompanied by Wood, who told Harry (in a hollow, dead sort of vocalization) that he didn't blame him in the slightest.

How tin can I not express joy at my Scottish prince'due south tragique despair? How can I not capeesh that every bit dead inside every bit he conspicuously is, Wood still reassures Harry that it isn't his fault?

 Captain Oliver Woods, Gryffindor, dead inside, nobly trying to convince thirteen year old boy who feels guilty that he isn't to blame for the team loss.

So Harry'southward freaking out near the Grim, (THANKS SIRIUS Yous WEIRDO) dementors, (Thank you FUDGE YOU ASSRAG) Lily'due south murder, (Thanks VOLDEMORT You lot Mucilaginous FREAK) and Malfoy's shitty attempts at comedy (THANKS LUCIUS AND NARCISSA Y'all INBRED BLONDES) only no 1 worry, because REMUS LUPIN has returned!

Remus is back to tell everyone to non mind to Snape and his shitty, transparent Werewolf essay (too belatedly Hermione'south figured it out Lupes!) and too to tell Harry about the dementors and Azkaban, and agrees to assistance teach Harry to fight a dementor. Permit's interruption to trip the light fantastic toe an interpretive appreciation dance for REMUS LUPIN here who is dealing with: the horror of thinking his ex best friend killed his other 3 ex best friends, hiding his werewolf condition, illness, and Snape, and even so withal offers to lend hours of his precious gratis time to help Harry learn the Expecto Patronum spell when he'd have no idea that Harry would testify aptitude so young for this spell. This could've taken years! Many total grown wizards can't practice it! And yet Remus agrees to help. Who wants to beginning a Remus Lupin fanclub with me?

Ravenclaw beats Hufflepuff in Quidditch and Oliver Forest "became repossessed of his manic energy" and for once in my life I'd similar to honey something the way Oliver Wood loves Quidditch. Think of all I could accomplish!

Poor Harry'south stuck at Hogwarts for another Hogsmeade weekend and all seems terrible until Fred and George pop up and give Harry maybe the greatest gift of all fourth dimension. It's a tough phone call, because he also gets the invisibility cloak his first year, but it is a mighty gift that proves how highly Fred and George think of Harry. Not just do they give him the map over their ain brothers or sister, but they give away the map to Harry when they're even so in school and could 100% still use it to become up to hijinks for two and a half more than years! Information technology's moments similar this that you realize how secretly kind Fred and George really are, fifty-fifty if they do terrible things to their siblings from fourth dimension to time.

Harry'south sneaking off to Hogsmeade with this precious magical artifact and await, I'm not even going to pretend that I'm mad that Harry does something this selfish and reckless when every adult is trying to keep him safe and abroad from Sirius and the dementors. I would've, without incertitude, done the aforementioned.

Ron and Hermione are in Honeydukes when Harry creeps up on them, (and actually, information technology's great that Harry's so morally upright when he at present has not i, merely TWO ways to sneak effectually undetected) debating whether to buy Harry something chosen Cockroach Clusters or not and COME ON GUYS of course not! Practise you hate him?! Who wants to swallow the unholy combination of my mortal nemesis, Cockroaches, combined with the most blest of food, chocolate?!

Hermione immediately starts trying to convince Harry to plough over the map and while she has a point, I don't blame Harry at all for not doing it.

Our trio decides to get to the Three Broomsticks and there they overhear a conversation total of government secrets and/or juicy gossip spearheaded past Fudge and McGonagall, and of form, our boy Hagrid. Because, well, you know…

And hey, Minister? McG? Flitwick? Someone? Mayhap do this in individual or apply a muffling charm next fourth dimension?!

So the Minister of Magic gets boozer in a pub full of students and lets loose with a bunch of secrets almost Sirius Black, and Harry, as if he hasn't got enough on his listen, finds out that Sirius Blackness is to blame for his parent'southward deaths and as well, oh hey, is his godfather. Plus that pesky murdering Muggles and Pettigrew affair.

It's a testament to JK Rowling's skill that she writes this exposition heavy scene and we are riveted to every give-and-take. It's been a while since I read this book for the first fourth dimension considering I'm of an advanced age

only I practise recollect how shocking these reveals were. Sirius and James were besties! Sirius betrayed James and Lily! It was his motorbike Hagrid rode on! He tried to take Harry! Sirius hasn't lost his heed in Azkaban! He was Harry's godfather! Prisoner of Azkaban is the most solidly written, shock filled book of the series and I stand by that argument.
